The Exhaust
As it comes from the factory the exhaust leaves a lot to be desired both in performance and note. This is particularly true with the export bikes as they are designed to meet the stringent European standards and to this end a "hot pipe" catalytic converter is a part of this exhaust. The Standard And Short Muffler Compared
One of the first things you as an owner can do is replace this asthmatic affair with one of the half-length mufflers that were originally fitted to these bikes. Either made in India or European made these "shortie" mufflers make a surprising difference to both the performance and exhaust note of the bike returning that lovely, deep thumping sound one expects from a 500cc British single. Click here to hear this wonderful sound! You can either mount the short muffler directly onto the standard front pipe or replace the front pipe with the longer version that is designed to go with the short muffler. One thing you will want to do if you replace the muffler is to re-jet the carburettor. This is necessary otherwise the bike will run lean and this will cause damage to the engine. It is also a good idea to re-jet if you replace the standard air filter with a more open design. To find out more about re-jetting and installing an open air filter go to the Air Intake & Fuel page.
